Karnataka may defy SC orders

After Tamilnadu's plea for over 9tmcft of water from Cauvery, the Supreme Court deemed that the state should be awarded 2.44 tmcft to save the crops and for the other irrigation purposes, keeping in mind the conditions in both the states. However, Karnataka and Tamilnadu, who have both been at loggerheads while making the decision, will not be at ease even after the SC's decision since the ruling BJP government insinuated that they might not comply with the decision of the SC.

The decision is yet to be made by the Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar whether or not to file a review petition in the SC later. With over six lakh hectares of land in TN, and a prevailing draught as per the TN counsel CS Vaidyanathan, they requested for 9tmcft of water but the SC was not please with the argument. However, they were also against Karnataka's contention that with the harvest of crops being finished already, TN required no more water.

The Supreme Court has set Feb 20 as the deadline for the Centre to issue the notification.Opposition parties in Karnataka have lashed against the BJP led governments for changing their stances on the issue and that they have been going easy with Tamil Nadu compromising the interests of the state. The Jagadish Shettar government however made it clear that they understand the detrimental effects of the tribunal award on Karnataka and that they would make sure that they protect the interests of the state at all costs.
