A Student Goes Missing; JNU Students Confine Top Brass For Over 15 Hours

As there is no development on a finding Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) MSc students Najeeb Ahmed, who was allegedly assaulted by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) students, went missing six days ago, the JNU students on late night on Wednesday laid siege to the administrative building for over 15 hours.

Reports said that a registrar, who is a diabetic, allowed to walk out of the office but the Vice Chancellor and other office staff remained confined throughout night as the students refused to relent.

The Students Union has demanded to lodge a new FIR even after the authorities have claimed that all efforts have been made on part of the university to trace missing Najeeb Ahmad.

Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar met the agitating students a arounf 12.15 am at the gate of his office. He said, “Just spoke to the students, explained to them the efforts made by JNU to locate the missing student. We appealed to JNU students to stop this physical confinement of university officials, but with no result.”

The VC, through Twitter, at around 1.30 am said, “Since the students did not let us go home inspite our appeal, we have no other option but be confined to the administration building.”

On 2.30 am in his last update, VC tweeted, “Agitating students should realize it is wrong to physically confine their own teachers like this. This will affect our JNU.” His another tweet read, “We tried to go out of admin building at 2.20 am. Agitating students did not let us go out.”

The former Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) President, Akbar Choudhary, by stating that the protest will continue as the demands are still not met, said, “There are two more demands which they agreed downstairs but refuse to give in writing. One, the VC should file a fresh complaint with the Delhi police and second, all the people involved in the episode of violence should be out of bound from the hostel, for a free and fair inquiry, till the inquiry is pending.”

“Also the appeal they gave remained unsigned,” he added.

Najeeb Ahmed has been missing from his hotel for six days after he was allegedly assaulted by the ABVP members on October 14 during a mess election campaign at Mahi-Mandvi hostel. The students said that he left his hostel without his wallet, mobile and even his footwear.
