Abhishek Banerjee, a Member of Parliament of Trinamool Congress and the West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew got severely injured on Tuesday in a road mishap. Police said that his car met with an accident on the Durgapur Expressway in Hooghly district.

After the accident, he was immediately rushed to the city nursing home, where doctors said that he had sustained orbital injury in a facial bone below the eye. The Criminal Investigation Department probe to find whether there was any foul play has been launched by the chief minister.

Reports said that Former Minister Manas Bhunja, who was part of the convoy, but in another vehicle, was safe.

Police said that Abhishek’s car hit the crane of a van towing a snag-hit milk van at Ratanpur, about six km from Singur, when the TMC leader was returning to the city after attending a party program in Baharampur in Murshidabad district.

According to TMC leader Becharam Manna, Abhishek’s car upturned and hit a divider after the accident.

Attending doctor Subir Mondal said, “He’s stable but obviously there is cause for worry because in such case there may be complications at a later stage.”

He added, “There is no head injury. All his vital parameters are OK. We have done bone and brain scans. But nothing was found. We have to go for repeat tests.” The doctor added that no major fracture was diagnosed but he needed to be kept under medial observation.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also met his beloved nephew. A nursing home official said, “She was talking to the doctors, and also his nephew.”
