EBC Quoa Ordinance Of the Gujarat Government Lapses

The ordinance issued by the ex-chief minister of Gujarat Anandiben Patel to provide ten percent reservation to the economically backward among the general category in education the government jobs lapsed on Monday.

The process of recruiting 50,000 people so far for various government posts will go on as scheduled. It will include the EBC quota later if the Supreme Court allowed it when it decides on the petition filed by the government, said deputy chief minister Nitin Patel.

Mr. Patel has already made clear that no recruitment would be made till the Supreme Court decides on the matter.

A senior official said, “The quota ordinance has lapsed now because the government did not bring the bill within six months of promulgating the ordinance.”

After the Patidar agitation in the state, Anandiben Patel has issued an ordinance on May 1 for the quota for the for the economical backward classes in General Category.

The decision, however, was challenged in the High Court and the validity of the ordinance was questioned as the Constitution did not provide for quotas based on economic backwardness.
