Uri Attack: Security Agencies Investigating Two-point Breach

The security agencies are probing the deadliest attack on the Army camp in J&K and its two-point breach, first at the Line of Control (LoC) at Uri and second at perimeter of the army base that saw the fencing wire being cut. Reports said that the two breaches helped the alleged terror organization behind the attack, Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM)’s fidayeens to carry out attack on heavily-guarded Army camp.

JeM has been considered as the main organization behind the attacks as a representative of the terror outfit called a local journalist in Kashmir to claim responsibility. JeM was was also the main organization behind the Pathankot Army camp attack, which is India’s crucial strategic base.

An official of the intelligence department quoted by a leading daily as saying, “As per preliminary inputs, the suspected Jaish terrorists seem to have followed their modus operandi of infiltrating from across Pakistan the night before the attack and heading straight for the target. We suspect that the four Jaish fidayeen crossed the LoC at Uri, which lies not too far from the Army base, late on Saturday night and were at the base in time for an early morning strike.”

The security agencies, which carried out investigations on Sunday, did not rule out help to the terrorists from a ‘mole’ or overground worker in alerting the plan’s mastermind to troop position within the camp which helped the terrorist in maximizing casualties. An officer said, “A recce was done. The terrorists were aware of the layout of the camp and knew their way around. They had possibly identified the stretches where the fence was not properly manned and accordingly found a safe spot to cut the perimeter wire.”

“All possible lapses on part of the Army, which was in charge of guarding both the LoC and base perimeter, are subjects of a detailed inquiry,” he further added.

An officer warned, “For now, the writing on the wall is clear: Infiltration has gone up significantly this year as compared to last year, with estimates putting the local cases so far at 100. In the days to come, both infiltration and terrorism will see a further spike.”

Uri attacks, facilitated by Pakistan, is a deadliest attack on army camp which killed 17 soldiers and injured few. Pakistan which is going to raise the issue of human rights violations in Kashmir, has lost its moral responsibility to talk on human rights violations by planning such a cowardly attack on the Indian soldiers. Although PM Modi has assured the nations that the martyrdom of the soldiers won’t go in vain, the pressure is on government to counter back quickly and aggressively and it would be interesting to see what steps now government take further on the issue.
