NDTV India Approaches Supreme Court Against Government’s One-Day Ban

The NDTV has approached the apex court against the one-ban imposed by the government of India for reporting against the national interest during the Pathankot attack.

By dismissing the allegations by the government, NDTV, on its website, has said that the other channels and newspapers reported the same information. The government has already imposed the ban on NDTV for one day, commencing from 00.01 hrs on November 9, 2016 till 00.01 hrs of November 10, 2016.

Meanwhile the Editor’s Guild of India has already condemned the ban over the channel and has demanded that Is should be withdrawn immediately. The Guild has also said that the ban is a reminiscent of the emergency period.

The statement read, “The ostensible reason for the order as reported is that the channel’s coverage of Pathankot terror attack on January 2, 2016 that the government claims gave out sensitive information to the handlers of terrorists. NDTV, in its response to a show cause by the government, has maintained that its coverage was sober and did not carry any information that had not been covered by the rest of the media, and was in the public domain.”

However, the government has defended the ban by saying that although the freedom of speech is important, national security comes first. National Secretary of BJP, Shrikant Sharma said, “We support freedom of press in a democracy but the nation comes first. There cannot be any compromise on national security.”
