A study has claimed to have discovered a new sex-position thanks to the habit of one of the frog breeds.

The study has shown that male Bombay Night frogs, found in India are able to fertilize a female’s eggs without making contact at the same time by leaving their sperm trickling down on the female’s back.

In the discovered sex position male frog without embracing female can be seen straddling over her back with his hands holding on to a nearby objects such as leaves, branches or tree trunks. The male move away, to allow the released sperm to trickle down the female’s back so eggs can be fertilized when the female lay eggs in the future.

The Indian Nights breed of frogs are considered as ancient group of frogs which diversified about 70-80 million years ago.

The research was conducted in the period between 2010 and 2012, during the Monsoon season in the Westerns Ghats for more than 40 nights.

Professor at Delhi university, Sathyabhama Dad Biju, study leader, said, “This is a remarkable frog with an unprecedented reproductive behaviour, which is unique for a number of reasons. This discovery is fundamental for understanding the evolutionary ecology and behavior in anuran amphibians”.

The Bomaby Night frogs has created a seventh sex position, which was earlier unknown and only six positions mating positions, called amplexus nodes, were known among the 7,000 species of frogs and toads found worldwide, according to reports.

Researchers have also found that, with only 25 species following the action, the female in Bombay Night frogs send out a mating call to the males, researchers stated. If the male infiltrates the territory of another, the furious battle between the two males are common in Bombay Nights.
