Indian Americans Honored At United States Of Women Summit

America witnessed its first United States Of Women Summit on June 14 and June 15, 2016 at Walter E Washington Convention Center in Washington DC with over 5,000 men and women attending the summit which was held by the White House.

President Obama had launched a White House Council for Women And Girls in 2009 after taking the office. President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden spoke strongly on the advancement of women and the administration’s role in providing Equal Pay to women as well as taking a stand strong stand on violence against women and Education in the summit whose theme was “When Women Succeeds America Succeeds”.

The current US government is the first to have a White House Adviser to President for the violence     against women as the VP Biden was the main force behind implementing the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) in 1994.

Under the initiative, Vijaya Lakshmi Emani from Ohio, in 2011 was awarded the Presidential Citizen’s Medal for her bravery in publicly speaking out about the domestic violence she suffered against the Taboo of the Indian society.

United Nations Women Deputy Director and an Indian American Laxmi Puri, former speaker of US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, Hollywood star Mariska Hargaitay and and American business top gun Warren Buffet were also present for the summit.
