Roy review

Story :

The story of the movie revolves around three characters, Kabir Grewal a filmmaker who earns huge amount of money by making movies on Roy’s robberies, Kabir’s new girlfriend, Ayesha, who is also a moviemaker, and finally the Roy himself. How these three lives interconnected one with the other in the movie is what Roy is all about.

Analysis :

Roy

The movie is Vikramjit Singh’s debut he has also written script and dialogues for it. The most obvious and good fact about Roy is that its story isn’t borrowed from any Bollywood or Hollywood’s earlier suspense or con dramas. Vikramjit Singh brings in a fresh tale uninspired from any other flick and delivers it with a strong cast, which everyone has been talking about ever since its conceptualization.

The best part of the film is its narration. Arjun and Ranbir aren’t shown having any interaction throughout the film, except towards the end, which adds to the charm. The plot itself strictly stays focused on Kabir without many detours.

Another good point about the movie is the music though not relevant in the plot of the film. Even the locales keep you engaged when there isn’t much going on in the story.

Roy has been produced with a whopping budget of ?45 crore and it has wonderful production values.

Coming to the drawbacks, the film is not what it claimed to be. Roy is a little bit of philosophical and a lot of emotional drama. The film drags certain scenes unnecessarily with too much of detailing. A snail would be faster than the pace at which we are introduced to the characters, but this is how it is meant to be. In an unhurried tale, the liveliness evokes in the form of brilliant numbers ‘Sooraj Dooba Hai’, ‘Chitiya Kalaiya’ and ‘Tu Hai Ki Nahi’ among others while Roy’s calls to cop investigating this case (Rajit Kapoor relives the simplicity of Byomkesh Bakshi in this role) adds fun.

Performance :

Roy-review

Ranbir Kapoor has played the title role in the movie, while Arjun Rampal appears as filmmaker Kabir Grewal. Jacqueline Fernandez, who has played double roles in the film, is seen as bohemian filmmaker Ayesha and glamorous globetrotter named Tia. Anupam Kher and Shibani Dandekar are in supporting cast. The lead cast's performances are the main highlights of the film.

Arjun Rampal took his character by storm and he literally seems to be living the character of Kabir Grewal. You can actually empathize with him. His transition from a casual flirt to an intense brooding guy is smooth and effortless. Ranbir Kapoor too manages to make an impression despite limited screen presence. He is cool and calm and never unnecessarily shows his vigorous side unless required. And Jacqueline too gave her best act till date while looking gorgeous. On a whole the performances of the trio are undoubtedly of top notch and neither of the three is less than the other.

But many other talented actors like Anupam Kher, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Rajit Kapur are not put to the best use in the movie.

Final Word: Roy ultimately makes up for a perfect Valentine’s Day treat, if you have an appetite for a slow-paced love story with philosophy, but if, you go in for some action to unfold, you’ll be extremely disappointed.
