Priest and President Pranab Mukherjee

President Pranab Mukherjee would make history after he dons the priest’s garbs for a ancestral ritual in his village Miriti, 240 kms away from Kolkata. He would perform the puja in his family temple and take part in the family rituals too.

This is not new for Pranab Mukherjee, who has attended the ritual all the times in his past political career that spans more than half a century. But never in the history of India has a president moved out of his presidential attire for being a priest as a part of a family tradition. Earlier while he was not the president, he would go back to the ancestral village for 4 days to be priest, despite holding a powerful position. The security which used to be tight earlier would be further tightened.

He has always been very sincere following the traditions set by his grandfather, Jangaleswar Mukherjee. According to the tradition, Pranab has to fill a earthen pot at the village canal and then chants Chandi slokas. However, it is not known whether he would perform the complete rituals amidst security issues.
