UN Releases Postage Stamp Honoring Carnatic Musician MS Subbulakshmi

The United Nations, on Sunday, to mark India’s ratification of the Paris Agreement on climate change released a postage stamps honoring Indian Carnatic musician MS Subbulakshmi, worth $1.20 (Approx. Rs. 79) in New York, according to the report published by a news agency.

After the first stamp presented to Carnatic music singer Sudha Raghunathan, who performed at the ceremony. The stamp has the iconic blue UN emblem alongside Subbulasksmi’s picture.

MS Subbulakshmi, the first Indian to perform at UN General Assembly, in October 1966. The musician, whose birth centenary is this year, is also the first musician to receive the coveted Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor.

Meanwhile, the United Nations also observed the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on Sunday as the International Day of Non-Violence, which was designated in 2007. “Every year on the International Day of Non-Violence, we re-commit ourselves to the cause of peace, as exemplified by the life of Mahatma Gandhi who was born on this day 147 years ago,” said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon.
