JNU Students Burns PM Modi Effigy On Dussehra; University Initiated Probe

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) once again is in the news as a section of the JNU students burned the effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with BJP chief Amit Shah and many other top BJP leaders.

Few members of the National Students Union of India, a Congress-affilated students’ union has claimed the responsibility for the act by asserting that it was a protest against the center’s failure in honoring its promises and the continuous attacks on various educational institutions across the country.

According to the media reports, the university has initiated the probe into the matter. Reports said that the the university administration has also ordered an inquiry into the effigy-burning of the Gujarat government and ‘gau-rakshaks’ and have issued show-cause notices to concerned students.

NSUI activist and the outfit’s candidate in the recently-concluded JNUSU polls, Sunny Diman said, “The effigy-burning was to symbolise our dissatisfaction with the current government. The idea is to root out the evil from governance and bring about a system that is pro-student and pro-people.”

“Look at what this government has done to our country. The promises it made are still on paper and are repeated only in speeches. Whenever students want to raise their voice, they are attacked by the administration, certainly on instructions from the government. This Dussehra, we wanted to put an end to these rubbish activities,” he further added.

According to the reports, the effigy was burnt at the famous Saraswati Dhaba on the JNU campus.
